Long time EYC member Elizabeth (Betty) Vail passed away Friday, March 16 at the age of 95 at Scandia Village in Sister Bay. Betty is survived by her three daughters – Leslie Harsch (Roy) Geneva, Illinois; Frances Vail of Northbrook, Illinois; and Sarah Birkinbine (John) of Northfield, Illinois; her four grandchildren – Christopher Vieau (Cristina); Deborah Cange (Edwin); Malcolm (Skip) Harsch (Matt Killen); Kristen Birkinbine Kelly (Kevin); her six great grand-children – Cheyenne and Cayman Vieau, Eddie and Sophie Cange, Ryan and Erin Kelly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration will be held this summer. Donations in her honor may be made to Good Samaritan Society Scandia Village, the Ephraim Yacht Club or the Ephraim Historical Foundation.

The EYC has lost a long-time member Frank Heidler, who passed away on March 4, 2018 at age 89. Our condolences go out to his family and friends, many who are also EYC members. Frank was preceded in death by his loving wife Sallie J. Heidler, and is survived by son Skip Heidler (Debby) of Hinsdale, IL, daughter Betsy Steele (Jeff) of Chicago, IL, son Scott Heidler (Amy) of Lisle, IL, grandchildren Woody Heidler (Emily), Erica Heidler, Lindsey Mazeika (Jason), Kendra Zalar (Alex), Amanda Smith (Ryan), Kaela Steele, Gretchen Steele, William Heidler, Bradley Heidler, and great grandchildren Avery Mazeika, Emma Mazeika, and Jamie Zalar.
A service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday March 17, at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sister Bay.

Membership includes use of club sailboats, provides one of the largest sailing programs in the Midwest, a competitive summer race series, junior social activities, complimentary clubhouse wifi, swimming and sunning on the EYC pier, bridge, bunco, social events, premier Ephraim sunset viewing, and reciprocal rights to many yacht clubs. Oh, and it means you’ll still get these pithy emails. Membership is $200 per year or less. However, we all know EYC summer memories are priceless!

The EYC is immediately accepting applications for Junior and Senior instructors. This year, EYC lessons are offered from June 18 through August 17, 2018, with mandatory staff training taking place the week of June 25. Instructors need US Sailing Level 1 certification, minimally. These courses are offered in the spring around the country. In addition, current First Aid and CPR certifications are required.

The EYC has added a new membership category called the “Young Adult Membership” for the 25-30 age group. (Adults under 25 can continue as part of a “Family Membership”). The Young Adult Membership is $50/year with no initiation fee and limited membership benefits. And hint hint: this membership makes a great holiday gift!
