Race at the EYC in 2012! / Thursday Teen Activity

Racing is a lot of fun and is the best way for juniors to get additional sailing time outside of lessons.  It is also the best way for juniors and adults quickly to become better sailors.

The EYC hosts weekly races in four separate sailboat classes — Flying Scots, Flying Juniors, Lasers, and Optimists — during the summer season.

New this year:

*  The EYC has invested in some new Optimists, so there are better odds for racers to draw an EYC-owned Optimist to race.

*  The EYC has added two more Optimist race times each week, so now there are four sets of Optimist races scheduled each week.

*  In July and August, Optimist races are divided into two separate series, by competitor age.  See the EYC’s Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for the EYC’s series races for more details, located at www.eyc.org/racing.

*  The drawing for EYC-owned boats is now ONE HOUR prior to the scheduled race time.

Weekly races began Saturday, June 16.  The weekly race schedule is:

Saturdays 9:30 AM:  Flying Scots

Saturdays  1:30 PM:  Optimists (ages 12-15 only)

Sundays 9:30 AM:  Optimists (age 11 and under only)

Sundays 1:30 PM:  Flying Juniors and Lasers

Mondays 5:30 PM:  Flying Scots

Tuesdays 5:30 PM:  Optimists (ages 12-15 only)

Thursdays 5:30 PM: Optimists (age 11 and under only)

Fridays 5:30 PM:  Flying Juniors and Lasers

(All times are skipper’s meeting times.  Races begin 30 minutes later.  The drawing to use an EYC-owned boat is 30 minutes prior to the skipper’s meeting).

You don’t have to be an expert to race at the EYC.  In the Scot and FJ classes, you can crew for someone more experienced.  The EYC staff and EYC members are often looking for racing crew, so come down to the EYC, put up a note on our bulletin board, and get on a boat!

You don’t have to have your own boat in order to race.  You can crew on someone else’s boat, or sail on an EYC-owned boat.

You don’t need an EYC Skipper’s License to skipper an EYC-owned boat in an EYC series race, except in the Flying Scot series.

You don’t even have to be an EYC member to crew in an EYC race (though you must be an EYC member to skipper).  So, bring your non-member friends out on the racecourse!
