About Us

The Ephraim Yacht Club (EYC) is a tax exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code whose primary purpose is education of youth in the sport of sailing. It is located on Eagle Harbor in beautiful and historic Ephraim, Door County, Wisconsin. The EYC is open from Mid-June through Labor Day. Members of the club include permanent and summer residents of Ephraim and other towns in Door County, as well as many shorter term visitors to Door County. Both family and student memberships are available.

A staff of US Sailing certified instructors teaches junior lessons in four two-week sessions beginning in mid-June. Private and adult lessons are also available. Supervised Junior Activities, such as sailing picnics and a scavenger hunt, are open to all Junior members each week throughout the summer.

The EYC hosts a full calendar of fund raising events to support the teaching mission, including the Opener, a 4th of July Ice Cream Party, the Regatta Bratfest, Founders’s Day Picnic and the Commodore’s Party. Impromptu barbeques occur almost every week following the evening Flying Scot races. Several weekly series races are run. Flying Scot races are held on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings. Fluying Junior Races are held Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Optimist races are held Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

The EYC owns Flying Scots, Flying Juniors, and Optimist’s which are available for use by qualified members free of charge. Wet and dry slips for Flying Scots, Optimist’s, other sailboats, and powerboats are available to members.

The EYC hosts an annual regatta at the end of July or in early August each year. The regatta includes Flying Scots and other classes. The Ephraim Regatta is the oldest on the Great Lakes, having been held every year since 1906. An annual Optimist/FJ regatta is held each July, a season-opener regatta is held in June, a Women’s regatta and a Junior regatta complete the regatta schedule.

EPHRAIM YACHT CLUB WATER SAFETY POLICY

(THIS POLICY WAS ADOPTED BY THE EYC BOARD OF DIRECTORS EFFECTIVE BEGINNING FEBRUARY, 1996)

I. Use of Club Owned Boats

A. The skipper shall have sole responsibility for the safety of the boat and the safe use and operation of the boat. This shall include the wearing of Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, or III by each person on any club-owned boat (including powerboats, Sunfish, Flying Scots and Windsurfers). (NOTE: 70% of water-related fatalities could have been prevented by the use of a PFD.)

B. Club-owned Flying Scots shall contain the following safety equipment meeting Flying Scot Sailing Association and Coast Guard requirements, including: a Danforth anchor with at least 100 feet of line; a paddle; a bailer or bucket; a whistle or horn; a throwable PFD; at least one wearable Coast Guard-approved PFD for each person on board; and a safety line attached to the transom mooring rings. It is the responsibility of the skipper to ensure these items are in the boat before leaving the pier. If any items are missing, ask the staff for a replacement.

C. It is the skipper’s responsibility to check the condition of all boat parts, lines, and halyards before leaving the pier.

D. A log sheet must be completed by the skipper before taking out a boat. The log sheet will include the boat name, skipper’s name, time of departure, expected return time, and number of people on board. This sheet will be maintained by the staff in a visible location at the club house.

E. No alcohol or illegal drugs are allowed on board club-owned boats at any time, nor may club-owned boats carry anyone under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.

II. Skipper qualifications required for use of Flying Scots

A. Any skipper under age 18 must have passed the EYC Skipper’s Test as administered in the lesson program.

B. Any skipper age 18 or over must have obtained a Skipper’s Certificate, which can be obtained in one of several ways:

1. Skipper and complete an EYC-scheduled Flying Scot race

2. Pass a short competency/safety checklist exam administered by the staff.

3. Provide a written sailing resumé acceptable to the staff.

C. The staff will maintain a registry of all qualified skippers

D. In a supervised lesson setting, a person not qualified to skipper may act as skipper under the supervision of a staff member or another qualified skipper.

III. Equipment

A. The EYC will ensure adequate ladders and throwable PFDs are present on each end of the pier.

IV. Junior Activities

A. All students enrolled in lessons are required to have an emergency care card on file. All other juniors, particularly regular participants in other EYC activities, are encouraged but not required to have such a card on file.

B. All participants in EYC-sponsored junior activities, junior Sunfish or junior Scot races are required to wear a PFD when on the water, regardless of whether the boat is club-owned or privately owned.

C. Juniors traveling by car for any EYC-sponsored junior event are required to wear seat belts.

V. Other safety and learning opportunities

A. This committee will endeavor to assist in offering programs such as the DNR boating safety course, an on-site CPR/First Aid course, and other such programs consistent with assuring a high level of safety in water sports.
